Animation channel Mashed reaches 1m YouTube subscribers milestone

Channel 4's comedy and gaming animation YouTube channel Mashed is kicking off 2018 in style: reaching the milestone of one million subscribers.

The channel is run by production company The Connected Set for the British broadcaster, and is aimed mainly at 18-24 year-old men, having launched four years ago. Mashed has generated 191m views of its videos so far.

"The Mashed team together with the network of fresh, young UK talent produce comedy animations and parodies about current favourites like Overwatch and perennial stalwarts like Super Mario and Sonic week in, week out," said creative director Jason Mitchell in a statement.

"They have earned every single subscriber through original, innovative ideas, risk taking and hard graft. The team has spent time nurturing new talent from the grass roots, fresh from university, often carrying out work from their bedrooms."

Mashed has been developing partnerships with games publishers too, working with Ubisoft, Digital Extremes and Bethesda in the last year to make animated videos based on their games.

"Hitting this milestone is a vindication of the team’s hard work and love of games, and proof there is a huge audience for this content," said managing director Jake Cassels.

"Mashed was a risky experiment for Channel 4 but thanks to their funding we’re delivering a young audience and working with writers, animators, artists and creatives from all corners of the UK."
