YouTube Red expansion on the cards

The CEO of YouTube has said that the platform aims to expand its YouTube Red subscription service to as many as 100 countries.

TechCrunch reports that Susan Wojcicki told the Code Media conference that “many more countries” were on the cards for the service, which launched in October 2015. Red allows for ad-free viewing in return for a $9.99 monthly subscription.

Big names such as PewDiePie had at one stage been drafted in to provide exclusive content for Red, although the Swede’s involvement was cut short after his racism scandal a year ago.

However, Polygon reports that comments made my Wojcicki also paint a slightly confused picture about what exactly YouTube Red is.

She said at Code that YouTube Red is “really a music service” which, as was later pointed out at a Q&A, is different to how the company has positioned the service in the past – that being an outlet for high-quality ad-free creator content that could compete with the likes of Netflix.

Indeed, the company itself in 2016 referred to Red as “the new studio, the new network”, stating that it wished to “open Hollywood’s rolodex and introduce our creators to visionary directors, writers and producers”.

Wojcicki has now confirmed, whoever, that the company is not looking to get into a billion-dollar content arms race with movie and TV streaming services.

“Our goal is to be a large, leading video platform and have a large diverse set of content,” she added. “There are all these categories that no one is really providing a solution to and we can be best at breeding there. Shows and movies is a very competitive space; it needs to be paid for economically with a subscription service.”
