Charity teams up with Twitch to promote female streamers

A charity called 1,000 Dreams Fund is to give a helping hand to aspiring female streamers on Twitch by handing out grants to help sustain growing channels.

The BroadcastHER Grants will be handed out to at least two school or college students each term and will range in size from $500 to $2,000. The cash is designed to help cover travel costs, equipment upgrades and other associated tools.

The aim is to support the “dreams of talented young women in need by providing access to critical funding, resources and meaningful mentor relationships”. The initiative hopes to highlight the gender gap women face in many fields, including streaming – there are currently no women in Twitch’s Top 10 highest viewed channel list.

An event named Streams for Dreams will kick off from March 1st and highlight 10 popular female Twitch streamers including Friskk, Gillyweedtv and theluckmusic.

"As an organization committed to all dreams, we are excited to partner with members of the Twitch community on this amazing new campaign," 1,000 Dreams Fund founder and CEO Christie Garton said. "The initiative will not only raise critical funds, but will also boost awareness around the shortage of support for these creative young women in the digital broadcasting space."

Twitch’s director of charity partnerships Andrew Schroeder added: "1DF's vision for their Streams for Dreams initiative is inspiring since it aligns perfectly with Twitch's mission to help creators make a living entertaining and educating their fans.

"The event will elevate the importance of greater gender equity during Women's History Month and is a wonderful opportunity for members of the Twitch community to engage with this issue, while giving back through 1,000 Dreams Fund's Twitch BroadcastHER grant."
