New platforms attempt to profit from YouTube’s alt-right clampdown

The shutting down of hate or the rise of censorship? That’s the eternal debate as the world continues to grapple with how to tackle the problem of racism and discrimination being broadcast to the online world.

Polygon reports that some creators are now turning to alternative video platforms in the wake of the growing pressure being placed on YouTube to keep its house in order.

DTube, for instance, looks much like YouTube at first glance, although behind the scenes there are key differences. It’s built on blockchain tech and pays its creators in BitCoin. It also gives a greenlight to any and all content, which is why its front page is littered with conspiracy theories and anti-globalist messaging.

BitChute, as well as being visually a bit of throwback, is even more contentious, with a hot mess of assorted political imagery and themes splattered all over its front page.

Accountability

“If someone reports a video for infringing on copyright, it’s our legal responsibility to take the video down and investigate, which we’ll do. But we aren’t policing content,” SteemIt CEO Ned Scott said, adding that YouTube’s reliance on advertising means that it will always, effectively, have to answer to ‘da man’. Or in other words, be accountable.

One proponent of these alternative platforms is Irish YouTuber Dave Cullen whose specialist subjects include spreading fear about immigration in Ireland. Others include white supremacist Stefan Molyneux, pro-Trumper Jack Posobiec and Gamergater Ethan Ralph.

There is a pattern there if you choose to spot it.

“It’s really down to us,” Cullen said. “I hope you’ll support the people who have been affected in the way that they have. It’s just inevitable, whatever happens. I would encourage you to follow everyone you can, myself included, on the alternative platforms and please make that extended effort. Because before too long, that’s going to be home. I have a feeling.”
