Facebook makes changes to its report system in efforts to knuckle down on offensive content

Changes to Facebook's report system means users can now make an appeal if they feel their content has been wrongly flagged.

Facebook has a set of community standards designed to explain what is acceptable to post on the platform and what isn't. The social service has now published an addition set of internal guidelines to further cement their rules.

This also includes the ability to appeal Facebook's decision to remove a post. Facebook has launched appeals for posts that have been removed for nudity/sexual activity, hate speech or graphic violence.

An appeal will be reviewed by a content reviewer within 24 hours, and if the post is deemed okay by Facebook's human team, it'll be restored.

Facebook will continue to expand the appeal system over the course of the year.

Community operations

The platform has a report system that users can select to report content that may be inappropriate. That report is then reviewed by Facebook's community operations team.

According to Facebook, the team is made up of 7,500 content reviews across 40 languages. The number of content reviews has increased more than 40 per cent since last year.

"We are working to extend this process further, by supporting more violation types, giving people the opportunity to provide more context that could help us make the right decision, and making appeals available not just for content that was taken down, but also for content that was reported and left up," Facebook's VP of global product management Moika Bickert said in a blog post.

We believe giving people a voice in the process is another essential component of building a fair system."
