Indian Lawmakers are calling for TikTok to be banned in the country

The Indian government is trying to call for a ban on video app TikTok being used in the country.

Lawmakes in India want to ban the app due to people participating in acts of “cultural degradation”.

According to a report posted in The Economic Times, M. Manikandan, information technology minister of the Indian state Tamil Nadu, has said that the government will recommend TikTok be banned in Tamil Nadu.

“I raised an issue forwarded to me by community welfare workers that the mobile application (TikTok) was acting as a platform for heated debates inimical to law and order, and sharing of sexually-explicit material.” Nagapattinam lawmaker Thamimun Ansari, the lawmaker stated.

Ansari also went on to add that if the government does not cooperate, then he and his team will follow up again seeking better regulation.

Government backlash

TikTok has gotten some backlash in the past, including concerns over the spread of harmful and extreme derogatory content. One person reportedly committed suicide over a very extreme case of bullying due to videos posted on TikTok. The app also has over 20 million users in India alone.

“We have robust measures to protect users against misuse, including easy reporting mechanisms that enable users and law enforcement to report content that violates our terms of use and community guidelines." A representative from TikTok said, speaking to The Verge.
