Celebrity endorsement sees video app TikTok soar past 6m downloads

Video loop app TikTok has hit 6m downloads in the US, and now some famous faces are jumping on board.

TV personality Jimmy Fallon and pro skater Tony Hawk are the latest celebrities to give TikTok a go, in a bid to connect with a younger audience. Hawk was also a guest speaker at this year's TwitchCon.

Fallon regularly uses Instagram and YouTube to promote stories from his TV programme 'The Tonight Show' or host live Q&As. According to a TikTok release, Fallon's videos have already racked up over 10 million views.

The app, launched in 2016 by Chinese tech company ByteDance, has experienced significant traction in the past two years. It recently took the number one spot in the US iOS App Store, surpassing the likes of YouTube, Instagram and Facebook.

TikTok's extreme growth is owed in part to its merger with Music.ly. That app became TikTok earlier this year and a large majority of its audience hopped over to the rebranded platform seamlessly.

Additionally, a report from SensorTower cites that TikTok has made over $1m in revenue in the US. It's currently the sixth most popular app on the iOS App Store, and the most popular app in the photo and video category.

On the UK iOS App Store, TikTok is the second most popular free app.
