Microsoft’s Mixer introduces game sales

Streaming video platform Mixer has introduced the ability for viewers to buy titles directly through the platform.

Mixer Direct Purchase, which needs to be specifically enabled by the streamer, allows the game that is currently being streamed to be purchased for Xbox One or Windows 10 PC. Streamers can also choose whether they want to promote a special edition of a game or a selected bit of DLC or add-on.

The process can be completed without exiting the stream, with the title automatically added to the viewer’s games library. Currently there are around 5,000 pieces of supported content.

Furthermore, sales made via this method will earn the streamer in question a five per cent cut, although this is described as an “at launch” figure and may be revised up or down in the future. Five per cent, incidentally, is the same cut offered by Twitch for its similar games sales feature.

The service is being rolled out to Mixer partners over the coming week, with wider access to follow over the next few months.

“We consistently hear from gamers that what motivates new game purchases are streamers’ content and recommendations,” a statement read. “For many of us, watching a game stream is the best way to discover new games to enjoy or just to see what an older game is all about for the first time.

“Streamers often recommend games and DLC to their audiences, and we support rewarding them for purchases made based on their recommendation and gameplay. That’s the goal of Mixer Direct Purchase.”
