YouTube unveils plans to expand and increase office space

YouTube has plans to expand its presence by creating new office spaces.

Managers at YouTube began a process last year to seek an expansion of its San Bruno, CA headquarters. This week, the city of San Bruno presented four development plans for the 98-acre site around the current YouTube offices for a public consultation which was attended by more than 50 people.

The expansion would add an additional 2.3 million square feet of office space and eventually create up to 10,000 new jobs to the San Bruno area. Not all of the positions and space would belong to Google but “the vast majority of it would be YouTube’s.”

Big boys

The fact that YouTube is breaking the capacity at its current workspace is probably no surprise. It's the world’s largest video-sharing site and the second most popular website on the internet.

To prepare for the expansion plans, a 40-acre site was acquired by the company for $300 million. This site is within the existing San Bruno Bayhill Office Park.

YouTube has been drawn towards a plan titled “Alternative 4, Greenway Connection” which has the most office space to be added out of the proposals presented. As well as adding 2.3 million square feet of office space and 4.5 acres for public open space, underground parking would also be constructed.

There is still a lot of intense planning to go ahead before a decision is made, but an outline of future moves could be finalised before the end of the year. YouTube hope to start work by the end of 2019.
