Instagram has released a new update that lets users find profiles by simply scanning a QR code.
The feature lets users generate a QR code for their profile or page, which can be scanned with any third-party camera app. It can be saved as an image and be shared on social media.
The QR code can also be printed onto business cards or physical media and scanned from there, which is extremely useful for businesses on the app. QR codes will place Instagram's Nametag system, which allowed users to scan QR codes of people they've met IRL through the platform's camera.
Japan was the first to receive this update, but it has now rolled out globally in line with the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. With more shops and businesses turning to social media in order to stay afloat, QR codes make it easier for users to discover new places to support, at least. It also eliminates the need for users to physically search for a business, which doesn't seem like much, but it's one less step towards a transaction.
