Snapchat drama leads to increase in app downloads

While the internet may have led you to believe that the world was ending for Snapchat, it seems the old adage that “there’s no such thing as bad publicity” may be true.

As reported by TechCrunch, data from Sensor Tower suggests that download numbers for the Snapchat app were up somewhere between 41 and 76 per cent in the week following the controversial redesign earlier this month. First time install numbers were up 55 per cent – that’s around 322k new users.

By comparison, in the week prior to the redesign downloads were down 35 per cent year-on-year.

Changes here to stay?

Numbers from fellow analyst firm App Annie show that the Snapchat app jumped from seventh in the US app charts to second in the days after the changes were introduced.

Then a little later down the line the app jumped from eighth to first following the headlines about Kylie Jenner’s dismissal of the service leading to a $1.3 billion share drop.

All of which perhaps makes Snap’s insistence that the changes are here to stay all the more understandable.

"We hear you and appreciate that you took the time to let us know how you feel," the company said in reponse to the now infamous petition from users demanding a halt to the changes.

It added that the redesign is a “new foundation” that is “just the beginning and we will always listen closely to find new ways to make the service better for everyone”.
